On a cold night that coincided with the first night of Carnaval celebrations, we had a small but enthusiastic crew meet up to watch the new movie “Flight” starring Denzel Washington. Armed with popcorn and our beers, we took our seats and hung on by our fingernails for the first 20 minutes that proved to be a real rollercoaster ride. The story went through the simulated events that resulted in a crash that could have killed all of the passengers onboard but ended up taking only 5 lives. The rest of the movie traced the path of the pilot, who was heralded as a hero, until the investigation started turning up disquieting and disturbing facts that suggested that he was no savior. Beyond the action/adventure aspect of the movie, it was a real eye-opener to the inner workings of a pilots life, their transient existence and the temptations that can lean them astray.
