We had a really nice turnout for our sushi making workshop. Our instructor and fellow TIC member, Ayumi, provided all the ingredients and expertise to help us make beautiful and delicious sushi rolls. Ayumi learned to make sushi from her father, who learned from the former sushi chef at the Okura in Amsterdam.
First, she taught us how to spread the rice so that we had a nice base in which to fill all our ingredients. Some of us had better luck than others at mastering this technique! We then made Philadelphia rolls, California rolls, hand rolls and experimented with our favorite ingredients.
We learned the technique of rolling with the sushi mat …you have to pull the mat or you will do what I did and roll your mat into your sushi!
We also learned that the secret to cutting the rolls was to use a good bread knife and wet your knife after each cut.
After sampling our sushi creations, we were able to take our remaining rolls home to share with our family and friends.
Thanks again to Ayumi who proved to be an experienced and patient teacher!
