Book Club Review: We All Began As Strangers

review by Melissa Donders

12 November 2018. After reading the book, We All Begin As Strangers by Harriet Cummings, an interesting discussion was had at tíc’s Book Club. The book was set in a small village in England where the inhabitants were frightened when small items in their homes would be moved around, or things went missing. Slightly based on a true story, the book followed the lives of different characters and how the intruder, whom they dubbed ‘The Fox’, impacted their life.

Discussing how and if we would notice if something had been moved around in our own homes, most of us agreed we would assume it was another person who we live with and not be worried.

We also discussed the similarities of ourselves, living in a country where we have moved for work or love, compared to one of the characters who had moved from her hometown of London to live with her new husband in this small village, which led onto discussion of how we all came to be living here in the Netherlands.

Overall, a lovely night was had, swapping well read books, saying farewell to one of our members and getting to know some new members.

Meet the board: Jessica – Event Team

For 3 years I’ve been living in Tilburg after moving from the US for…you guessed it—Love. My husband (Jasper Willem) and I met in the US at a wedding of a mutual friend.

Since I am an English teacher it was easy for me to make the move without giving up my career. Upon moving, I didn’t know anyone outside his family, so I went straight to google find expat events and clubs. Thank goodness I found tic! Some great friendships and experiences have come out of my involvement with tic. And now, I’ve put down my roots in Tilburg by buying a house and welcoming our new baby, Eleanor.

This year, I hope to give back to the organization that has meant so much to me by volunteering as an event planner. I’m looking forward to getting to know our new members!!

Review of the Tilburg Ghost Tour!

By Tanya Krupiy

31 October 2018. I enjoyed the Tilburg Ghost Tour. We had a nice start at the Wijnbar Cru. Jessica brought cool Halloween headbands and glasses so we began with a spooky start. She also brought candy. Some of us felt childhood memories return as we ate the candy.

The guide wore a historic costume and spoke in Dutch. For those of us who have not mastered Dutch, there were English language recordings of the tour.

The tour was very informative about the history of Tilburg. We learned about injustices, the abuse of power and why Tilburg has fewer historical buildings than many other cities.

The tour led me and others to reflect on serious matters. It was very interesting. So there was a mix of everything during this event.
