Worstenbrood (Sausage roll) Workshop Review

by Rochelle Buhr

26 Nov 2019. Have you ever had fresh, warm worstenbrood, a Tilburg speciality?Better yet, have you ever made them? A lucky 8 of us did on Tuesday at
De Smaeck Bakkerij in Berkol-Enschot.

Although probably not something you’d make at home, we had a great time
putting them together with the professionals at the bakery!

Meet the board: Anne-Lise Artaud

I arrived in the Netherlands in August 2012. It was a sunny day at the train station in Rotterdam. I am French and was supposed to stay for 1 year of study and then go back home. Well, as you might have guessed it already it didn’t go as planned because I am still here!

I just fell in love with the country and its culture. There was something about the Netherlands that made me feel better than in my own country. So, after 1 year of study in Rotterdam, I decided to give it a shot and stay an extra year. I moved to Tilburg in 2013 to study at Tilburg University. I went afterwards to work catching all opportunities, so I could start my career before going back to France. It went so well that I decided to stay and later on to go to Dutch class to integrate better in my new country. There I met other internationals like me, who introduced me to the club. I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to be part of this club. It really helped me to find my place.

I like challenges, so I went for the event team with my friend Jessica and I can say that it was worth it. Actually the full experience of travelling and establishing myself in another country was worth it.

tícMovie Night: The Good Liar Review

by Tanya Krupiy

22 Nov 2019. On Friday we went to see a movie ‘The Good Liar.’ The movie took unanticipated turns and kept the audience in suspense. I found the quality of acting very good.

We went to the Havana café for drinks afterwards. It was a very relaxed evening. I had a lot of fun hearing about cross-cultural experiences in different countries. I laughed so much that my mascara started leaking at some point.

Global Climate Strike

by Anne van Oorschot

The date chosen for a Global Climate Strike in The Netherlands was Friday, 27 September  2019 in The Hague. Since I live in Tilburg, my day started with a bike ride to the train station where I started off for The Hague. It was heartening to see I was not alone – trains to The Hague from across the country were crowded with climate strikers carrying signs. (more…)

Book Review: Becoming

review by Renata Kenda

21 Oct. 2019. It was a rainy autumn evening, when we gathered to discuss our latest book “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. We had a fruitful discussion while enjoying the drinks and tasty nibbles next to a warm fireplace.

All of us joining this book club session liked the book, even those, who were not very in favor of

#TBT Movie: The Light Between Oceans

light-between-oceans-1Next week we’ll meet up for another Movie Night.  For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look back at the Cinecitta movie “The Light Between Oceans”!

x—x—x—x—x—x

11 November 2016. by Anne van Oorschot. We had our first #TilburgInternationalClub movie evening of the club year at Cinecitta to see the film The Light Between Oceans. This beautiful film is based on the debut novel by M. L. Stedman and tells the story of Tom (Michael Fassbender), a Lighthouse keeper in Western Australia and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander). Tom, a WWI veteran, is damaged by the atrocities he has seen as a soldier and feels his past will prevent him from having a happy future, so accepts the job of lighthouse keeper on a desolate island. He is surprised by the affection of Isobel, a lovely girl who lives on the mainland and they are married and head off to the island where they create a solitary, yet happy life together. (more…)

Book review: Slaughterhouse 5

by Anne van Oorschot

3 Sept 2019. Our first gathering of the Book Club took place on September 4th – very early in the club year and prior to the tíc Welcome Event. That may explain why we were quite a small group, including 1 brand new member. We had all read the book – not hard since we’d had the entire summer and it was quite a short story.

As a young man and a prisoner of war, Kurt Vonnegut witnessed the 1945 US fire-bombing of Dresden in Germany, which reduced the once beautiful city to rubble and claimed the lives of thousands of its citizens. This atrocious act was (more…)

tíc raising awareness for Make-A-Wish Nederland!

tíc has set a goal to support a different charity every year whether by fundraising, event participation or volunteer work.

This past June, tíc chose to support the charity Nacht van de Vluchteling (Night of the Refugees). A small of group of tíc members not only participated in the event by walking a 20 km route, they also raised a total €950 for the foundation!

This year, our members voted on their choice of charity from a list of worthy causes including the Ronald McDonald Huis Middenwest-Brabant (Tilburg), CARE Nederland, WorldGranny, Connect2Us and Moviera (Tilburg).

We are happy to announce that tíc will be supporting Make-A-Wish Nederland this year through combined contributions of time, goods and monetary donations from the Tilburg MeiMarkt.  We’re proud to be working with Make-A-Wish and we look forward to raising awareness for this charity.

tíc’s first Dutch Conversation Meet-up!

by Jessica de Swart

9 Oct. 2019. tíc has officially started its ‘no books/no teacher/no pressure/all levels welcome’ Dutch conversation group. The idea is to discuss a pre-designated topic for the evening to guide the flow of conversation.

On our first get together, we split up into 2 groups and gave Dutch conversation our best efforts while sharing a drink and getting to know each other. The shock of the night was that the person in my group who carried much of the conversation was actually the person who has been in the Netherlands the shortest amount of time! (Shout out to Wendy, carrying on interesting conversation after only 6 weeks here!) Especially after talking with her, we were all inspired to make more effort to use Dutch and plan to have this meet up again. A special thanks to our native speaker member, Marloes, who joined the meet up and chatted with us too! Who says language learning has to be boring or stressful?

President’s message – Oct 2019

I don’t know about you, but sometimes it seems life is so busy and goes so fast that if you don’t slow down, you’ll miss it!  I made a commitment to myself to take a step back and start enjoying more of the things I love doing. And one of those things is being the president of tic!  With such a busy work schedule, I found myself passing on some of the fun activities the event team has been putting together. This club season, I decided to have more fun with my fellow club members while also taking more initiative to get the club increased exposure in the community. (more…)

#FBF: Maisdoohof (Corn Maze) Run!

Running through the mazeIn keeping with the Fall spirit, for #FlashBackFriday, let’s take a look back at our run through a local corn maze!

x—x—x—x—x—x

22 Sept 2013. by Patricia Gonzalez. It was a cool, cloudy Saturday afternoon – the kind you get when autumn follows fast on the heels of summer as if determined to obliterate memories of 30-degree days. A fifteen-minute drive from Reeshof brought us to the Dutch countryside where the roads were lined with trees and every few hundred meters, farmhouses dotted the landscape.

Our little group gathered at a maisdoolhof (corn maze) in Dongen to go on a speurtocht (trailhunt). The instructions were simple: walk through the cornfield looking for letters and pictures. The letters, when combined, form a message. Sounds easy? Not quite. Once in the maze, (more…)
