tíc at Hap Stap, rain or shine!

by Mala Raman

12 jun 2019. Despite the showers early on in the evening, tíc members ventured out for an evening of munching and chatting at the annual Tilburg Hap Stap Festival. Sixteen local restaurants showed off their best tapas-style dishes as tempting aromas drew in the masses. The event was made up of dozens of tents dotted throughout the Interpolis’ courtyard (near the Spoorlaan). tíc secured a table under the tents of De Carpacciobar.  Attendees sampled dishes such as fish and chips, steaks, burgers, sweet potato fries and more.

Coincidentally, the Mayor of Tilburg, Theo Weterings also chose to stop by De Carpacciobar and said a happy and welcoming hello to tíc. Nostalgically, the Mayor and our tíc president, Yolonda van Riel, recreated their 2018 Welcome to Tilburg event portrait.

Like every tilburg international club borrel, the first drink was provided by the club. Club members enjoyed their beverages along with the free samples of Schrobbeler being passed out to all event attendees. tíc members hung out together well past the official borrel time and continued to have a great time in the cool summer evening.

Review by Jessica Lipe. We met up for the opening evening for the 4-day Hap Stap Festival in Tilburg. This year was the 23rd year of Hap Stap and 16 local restaurants offered a sampling of their menu. Our group tried all kinds of delicious food, like samosa, ribs, shrimp and saffron risotto, and tuna. It was a great way to discover restaurants worth checking out in Tilburg. With new and old faces present, it was a pleasant evening spent chatting and tasting in the garden of Interpolis downtown.

St. Patrick’s Day celebration

2df40af2-d44b-4515-b639-d504ee88d96516 Mar 2019. Review by Jessica Lipe. The Saturday night before St. Patrick’s Day, a group of tíc members dressed mostly in green gathered at the most Irish place in Tilburg- Ruby’s Irish pub to raise a glass of Guinness in celebration of Irish heritage.

When we arrived at the pub, we caught the final moments of the tense 6 Nations Rugby championship (Scotland v England). As the match ended in a draw amidst a chorus of boos and cheers, we began our night of chatting and getting to know newer members of the club.

Laughter and drinks were a plenty. Later in the evening, there was live music, and while it was not such great music, it did not hinder our good time.

Review by Andrew Kelly. This year was a special year as St. Patrick’s day, the national holiday of my home country, the Republic of Ireland, coincided with a Friday. So, the TIC team decided to combine the monthly borrel with a St. Patrick’s day celebration and, of course, have it at Ruby’s Irish bar. (more…)

A Merry Christmas Borrel at Café Bakker

by Mala Raman

21 Dec 2018. On a cold, but clear night, our members once again met up at Cafe Bakker.  For most, it was the end of work for the year, so everyone was looking forward to socializing and snacking during our traditional Christmas borrel.  Every year we ask attendees to wear their best “ugly sweater.” It was interesting to see what our members’ ideas were of an “ugly” sweater.

Despite the overcrowding around the Korte Heuvel along all the terraces, it was pleasantly cozy inside the cafe where members shared their happiness of starting the holiday season and discussing Christmas and New Year’s plans.

A borrel was the perfect way to bid everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

‘t Taphuys Borrel/Happy Hour review

by Tanya Ahern
11 Oct 2018. It was an unseasonably warm evening when tíc members met up at ’t Taphuys bar and restaurant in Tilburg’s centrum. Thirsty guests discovered 40 beers and 32 wines on tap there for their drinking pleasure.
It was a great turnout of both new and established members mingling and munching together at the trendy bar. Several party-goers explored the tap pass card where they could take small samples of each beverage and only pay for each centiliter consumed.

Later that evening, the party spilled out to the patio and the warm air and warmer company made everyone excited to attend the next tíc event.

TIC Bowling Borrel review

by Hoda Barzegaran

I want to thank all the people who were involved in putting together the Dolfijn bowling center event.  We had so much fun from the beginning till the end. It started with a great welcome from Mala’s friendly and smiley face and a lot of help on how to get prepare.

And, it continued with playing and mingling with lovely people from different countries while we were enjoying our drinks. It was like being with old friends, even though we had all just met. What a wonderful experience!

After one hour of bowling practically every one stayed longer. we all sat around a big table like a big family and got a chance to talk more and to know each other better. It was an awesome evening. Can’t wait to see everyone again in TICnic on June 16!

#TBT: Bowling Borrel 2012

This evening we’ll meet at the Dolfijn Bowling Center for our combined bowling/happy hour.  For Throwback Thursday, let’s take a look at the TIC experience from 6 years ago!

23 November 2012

TIC members met at the Dolfijn bowling alley in Tilburg to combine our monthly happy hour with a little bowling. All claimed to be amateurs, but when Sondra arrived …

The winning team!

The winning team!

We started by splitting into 2 teams for the 2 lanes we had reserved (and just getting names in the scoring machine was a challenge to begin with!!) then…let the bowling begin! Everyone had a different style and with no gutter guards, a variety of techniques became visible: Straight into the gutter, first a lovely curving path…then into the gutter, a partial hit, and the occasional strike. Consistency did not seem to be anyone’s strong point, even Yolonda who took bowling as a class in College and Mala, whose parents are championship bowlers. Go figure.

The little ones have a go!

The little ones have a go! The TIC kids who attended had a great time rolling the ball, with the smaller ones getting help from their parents, and really did pretty well. Of course there were drinks for all to keep us going and a lot of time for exchanging bowling tips and chatting about daily life and challenges. At the end of our time bowling, the winner was…unknown!? At the end of one game it just jumped to the next game, with all stopping at the end of our 120 minutes! Actually, since everyone had such a fun start to their weekend, we were all winners!

The weather was perfect for an evening of munching and kletzen at the 22nd annual Hap Stap Festival. Sixteen local restaurants showed off their best tapas-style dishes and the tempting aromas of gourmet dining blanketed the revelers. The event was was made up of dozens of tents dotted throughout the Interpolis’ courtyard (near the Spoorlaan). TIC’s own crafty Corey secured the perfect cozy table right in the middle of the action and attendees sampled dishes such as fish and chips, steaks, burgers, friets and more.

Like every Tilburg International Club Borrel, the first drink was provided by the club and iced Schrobbeler with lime was the drink of choice for several attendees. Many club members danced to the 1960’s R&B sounds of the live band The Motown Marbles. The summer daylight extended to 10pm and the group enjoyed the lekker weer until the late evening.

Pub Quiz at the Esplanade

Article by Mala Raman

This year we had another rousing pub quiz at the Grand Café Esplanade, that once again sparked the competitive streaks amongst our stalwart TIC members.  A group of hard core TIC members met at the grounds of Tilburg University to battle out the chance to be crowned the Winners of The Pub Quiz. Presented by Yolonda, the questions were challenging and informative under various international categories.

Mock fights, allegations of cheating and most of all laughter rang through the night. As usual, the drinks and snacks provided helped to calm even the most ardent pub quiz participants.

At the end of the night Estela, Tanya, Anita, Mike and Mala were crowned the Winners of The Pub Quiz and presented with a prize. Also lucky were the table that were crowned the Losers of The Pub Quiz as they were also presented with a small prize.

Borrel at De Pont

by Anne van Oorschotpont-1

10 things I learned at the TIC borrel on February 17th at De Pont:
  1. Modern Art museum De Pont is located in a former wool spinning factory and the large light spaces and intimate “wool rooms” offer a good setting in which to view modern art.
  2. The museum is named for the businessman Jan de Pont (1915-1987) who left a large sum of money after his death for the creation of a museum of modern art. The museum receives no government subsidy pont-3and operates solely on de Pont’s legacy.
  3. The museum was recently enlarged, adding new exhibition areas and a larger café/restaurant with a lovely terrace area outside.
  4. On one end of the new restaurant area, there is a lovely glassed in area pont-2which looks out over the garden – complete with crackling fireplace – where guests can relax on a comfortable couch and chairs to enjoy a drink and snacks.
  5. The “Flam Keuchen” on the menu (kind of thin crusted pizza) makes a lovely snack if cut in smaller pieces.
  6. The TIC members who attended didn’t have any trouble finishing the bottle of wine we ordered.pont-4
  7. My favorite piece of art was the giant stainless steel piece made by Anish Kapoor – I was upside down over it!
  8. For some of the other pieces, I need a little “help” to appreciate them, and had to remind myself that even though I might think I could make them…I probably could not!pont-5
  9. No matter where the TIC Borrel is – it is always fun!
  10. Starting in March 2017, the museum will be open every Thursday from 17.00-20.00 and admission will be free!
