Netflix Party Review

Tilburg International Club Expat Movie Night11 December 2020. by Masako Kato. I joined the tíc Netflix Party. Netflix Party ia an online film party where we look at the same Netflix movie simultaneously from our home and chat with each other about the film while we are watching it.

It was my first time to attend a Netflix Party and I had no idea how this was going to work. I already had a Netflix account, but I needed to download Teleplay, an app which lets you join the party.

TIC was as always very considerate and inclusive. That is to say that they gave us a very clear technical instruction what we needed to do and also organised a zoom call just before the movie started to help us with any technical hiccup. So, nobody needs to miss it due to the lack of technical skill. I needed this call to get help to activate my Telplay. (more…)

Movie review: The Honest Thief

Tilburg International Club Expat Movie Night30 Oct 2020. by Martina Leonard. We were so lucky to have had our movie night before the 2nd closure of cinemas!

Hoping to cut a deal, a professional bank robber agrees to return all the money he stole in exchange for a reduced sentence. But when two FBI agents set him up for murder, he must now go on the run to clear his name (“In-and-Out Bandit.” ) and bring them to justice.

Many thanks to Anne for arranging the bag of goodies, a must for munching during the film. All 10 tickets were taken and the usual suspects attended at the Pathe. We met in the lobby and had no trouble recognizing each other with masks!! (more…)

27 September 2019. For September’s tíc movie night, we were all “Blinded by the Light” at Cinecitta.

Without spoiling too much for those who still want to watch this film about the impact of “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen’s music has on a Pakistani teenager living in England, I give it two thumbs up!

Not only an uplifting and touching story of courage, hope and the unique way in which family can lift the human spirit, this film was also a good starter for discussions while having drinks and hapjes after the movie. I found it a great chance to get to know new people while having interesting chats on life in and around Tilburg as well as future activities of tíc. Count on me for the next movie night, I will be definitely in!

tícMovie Night: The Secret is out!

Tilburg Movie Club for Expatsby Val Fraser

25.09.2020. I woke up this morning with the pleasant buzz of knowing I’d enjoyed a good night out and have made new friends! It was movie night with tíc.  A simple idea, we watch a movie in its original language (English) and after the movie discuss it, over a drink, in a neighbouring pub.

Fourteen of us met at the Pathé.  The movie was ‘The Secret’ based on the book by the same name.  Reviews of the movie were divided, some enjoying it more than others.  Afterwards, sitting comfortably in the pub, the movie did not manage to hold our attention for very long as we quickly moved on to getting to know more about each other and our diverse, colourful backgrounds.  Laughter, fun & friendship!  As we left the pub around midnight, I knew I would be back for the next tíc event!

Check out our movie review of The Gentlemen!

tícMovie Night: The Gentlemen review

by Anne van Oorschot

5 Jun 2020. After weeks of event cancellations, it was with great enthusiasm that I heard movie theaters could reopen on June 1st. 🙂

Pathé was careful to stick to the required 1.5 meter distance and we were assigned seats individually as we entered the theater. We sat in pairs with 3 seats and 2 rows separating guests. The Gentlemen, a combination gangster/shoot-em-up and comedy film, was a good choice and just what we needed. (more…)

tícMovie Night: 1917 Review

by Anne van Oorschot

31 Jan 2020. On the last day of January, we had the first movie night of 2020. ☺ tíc members met at Pathé to view 1917 – a new movie about the First World War.

For those who have not seen this award-winning film, director Sam Mendes filmed in the “one-shot” format, stretching it out to feature length.  Several takes and set-ups are seamlessly conjoined to give the appearance of a continuous cinematic point-of-view, albeit with periodic ellipses. The result is an immersive drama that leads the viewer through the trenches and battlefields of northern France, as two young British soldiers attempt to make their way through enemy lines on 6 April 1917. by Yolonda van Riel

27 Oct 2017. Loving Vincent was chosen for October’s movie night. A nice group gathered, all curious about what to expect from this film. There was actually quite a bit of discussion before it even started. “How in the world can they make a decent movie using paintings?” “ I wonder if it will have a cartoon feel?” “I’m sure I’ll either love it or hate it!” (more…)

tícMovie Night: The Good Liar Review

by Tanya Krupiy

22 Nov 2019. On Friday we went to see a movie ‘The Good Liar.’ The movie took unanticipated turns and kept the audience in suspense. I found the quality of acting very good.

We went to the Havana café for drinks afterwards. It was a very relaxed evening. I had a lot of fun hearing about cross-cultural experiences in different countries. I laughed so much that my mascara started leaking at some point.

#TBT Movie: The Light Between Oceans

light-between-oceans-1Next week we’ll meet up for another Movie Night.  For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look back at the Cinecitta movie “The Light Between Oceans”!

11 November 2016. by Anne van Oorschot. We had our first #TilburgInternationalClub movie evening of the club year at Cinecitta to see the film The Light Between Oceans. This beautiful film is based on the debut novel by M. L. Stedman and tells the story of Tom (Michael Fassbender), a Lighthouse keeper in Western Australia and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander). Tom, a WWI veteran, is damaged by the atrocities he has seen as a soldier and feels his past will prevent him from having a happy future, so accepts the job of lighthouse keeper on a desolate island. He is surprised by the affection of Isobel, a lovely girl who lives on the mainland and they are married and head off to the island where they create a solitary, yet happy life together. (more…)
