Guests are Welcome!

Guests are always welcome at any #TilburgInternationalClub event. It’s a great way to get a feel for the club, our members and the types of events you can come to expect as a member.  In the past, many of our guests have become members after a full tíc experience!

Many expats feel, even after living in the Netherlands for a longer period of time, never fully welcomed into Dutch society and therefore, never feel an affinity with the culture. A key upside to being a guest of tíc, is getting out to meet locals, learning about the country, better understanding social routines and customs all within a supportive group of individuals and families with like circumstances.

Want to know more about attending a tíc event as a guest? Check out our Guests Welcome page for more details.  Have questions or already interested in one of our upcoming events? Just let us know at til.int.club@gmail.com!

We look forward to meeting you!

Expats enjoy their time with TIC

I am Amit Kumar, and a previous member of TIC along with my wife. We joined TIC at the end of 2016. It was really a very nice experience being a part of TIC. We enjoyed a lot, made a lot of friends. TIC organised lot of activities and group sessions of various kinds.
There are lot of opportunities to do something and meet with new people and friends. Moreover, everybody was open to new ideas and discussion. From the day trips to some city, to exploring the famous museums, watching movies together, to going for a picnic to book discussion to crashing at Borrels in some pubs etc. they have lot to do.
There were a lot of opportunities to meet people from different countries and get to know their culture and heritage. Moreover, TIC arranged a lot of events which helped get to know and adopt the Dutch culture.
I would definitely recommend to joining TIC.

Back at home… sort of

gnrnashvilleby George Oeser

In 2013, my husband, Rick, and myself got on a plane and flew to the Netherlands. We had no idea what to expect, we had signed a lease for an apartment we had never seen in person and  we were moving to a city we didn’t know existed a few months earlier. The one thing we knew for sure is that we didn’t know a single person in #Tilburg. We were excited and frightened in  pretty much equal amounts.

Within just a few weeks we had learned (more…)

Donders family says, “so long”

dondersby Melissa Donders

My Dutch husband, my 3 teenage girls and I arrived from Australia to Tilburg in November 2015 to live for one year. Within 2 weeks, I was looking for an English speaking book club and asked at the library, but they didn’t know of any. So I started searching on google and the Tilburg International Club website with all the information about book club, social functions and general help with integration into Dutch life came up.

The first book club I attended was a cold, wet night and as my confidence in driving on the other side of the road had not yet kicked in, I decided to ride my bike. Google maps said a 20 minute ride…..took me 45 minutes battling against the rain and wind. I arrived wet, hot and sweaty to a group of about 15 ladies who were kind enough to catch my breath before allowing me to introduce myself! I believe now, if I had to make the same journey again, 1 year later, I would make that ride in 20 minutes.

Having events at TIC gave me an opportunity to meet some lovely people while trying to navigate my way in a new country. We have enjoyed attending the events as a family and also as a couple or me on my own. TIC gave us a feeling of being included while meeting new, interesting people that we might not have met otherwise.

We are now back in Australia and who knows what the future holds, but if we return to Tilburg I’ll be back at book club!

A new expat’s view

My family and I arrived here in Oisterwijk almost exactly 10 months ago. We have a four-year-old and two-year-old twins and were completely unsure if we were making the biggest mistake of our lives- OR we were going to have the best experience of our lives. It’s hard to tell when you are heading to a country you’ve never lived in before- especially so with your kids!

Time and time again, I cannot say how lucky we have been with finding (more…)

Buddy Program sponsored by Tilburg University

Buddy Program

In the upcoming months, Tilburg University is initiating a new buddy program to help welcome and help newcomers feel at home in Tilburg. The process has been designed to support newcomers in broadening their understanding of the Dutch culture, widening their professional and social network and becoming more familiar with the city of Tilburg. A Buddy program will be a great tool to accelerate the newcomer’s ability to deal with questions, issues and concerns.

A buddy is someone who partners with a newcomer to Tilburg and/or Tilburg University during the initial period of adjustment after arrival. While primarily responsible for offering advice and guidance, the buddy may also offer encouragement and knowledge resources, as they help introduce the newcomer to the social and professional culture of the Netherlands.

The role of a buddy is important, and potentially critical, to the integration and well-being of a newcomer. While the newcomer adapts to a new country, town and work environment, a buddy may be an invaluable resource to helping pave the way to a smoother transition process.

TIC would like to support Tilburg University in their effort to assist newcomers by encouraging members of TIC to become a buddy. To learn more about the buddy program and becoming a buddy, please contact:

Mala at info@DEnLingua.com for more information.

One of our members says “farewell!”

Katie, Alerk and Callie bid us a fond farewell!

So many things have changed in Tilburg since we first arrived 7 years ago, just before the start of the academic year in 2005.  The Midi theater closed, opened and closed again. We went from having zero sushi restaurants to more than 5.  Pieter Vreedeplein opened.  But, the change that had the biggest effect on our lives must have been the start of TIC in 2008. (Ok maybe the birth of our daughter had a bigger effect on us, but more about that later.) I think I was one of the first University employees to sign up for TIC.  (more…)
