#TBT 2015 Welcome Day: Spoorzone

In just 2 days, we will be hosting another Welcome to Tilburg event!  For #ThrowbackThursday, let’s take a look at the festivities from 2015!

x–x–x–x–x–x–x

Article by Patricia Gonzalez

Time flies. So with places as with people. From 1868 to 2011, the Spoorzone was an industrial site – a place where trains were built and repaired for Nederlandse Spoor and “migrants” from Utrecht came to work on the railways. Today, the Spoorzone is home to the Red Cross, an intended hub for entrepreneurs, a skate park for youth and, during Mundial festival or one of the many market weekends (e.g., Bazouq, Swan Market, Pasar Malam), a bustling event space.

Three years ago, I was a newcomer to Tilburg meeting other foreigners at TIC’s Open House. On 26th September, I was one of the “old faces” welcoming newly moved buitenlanders and sharing my own stories about living in this city.

Welcome Day began with a tour of the Spoorzone led by Stadsgidserij Tilburg. In the span of an hour, our guide walked us through history, bringing to life tales of railway workers – a smaller segment of the population in the then mostly textile-focused town. He made us smile to hear of the one-cent increase in workers’ hourly wages (big money then!) and how lunches used to be delivered via small pass-throughs in the imposing wall that enclosed the spoor zone. He also told us of the city’s future plans for the area, helping us imagine what’s in store for the space: the new public library, a passageway for bicycles and pedestrians traveling from above the tracks into the city center, and a possible seats2meet venue – all exciting additions to the city.

We ended our tour at Restaurant De Houtloods, the oldest building in the 13-hectare zone. Under the steel trusses and the clear blue skies, Wethouder Marcelle Hendrickx gave a speech that was warm and welcoming – apropos for the day. Afternoon very quickly turned to evening, as happens when you’re having fun. There were drinks and borrelhapjes, old friends to catch up with, new acquaintances to make, and the shared experience of living and working and loving Tilburg to discuss. It was a pleasant way to kick off the club year.

If you couldn’t come to Welcome Day, don’t worry. There are still plenty of activities in store – a whole year’s worth. But don’t blink or you might miss it!

Welcome Day is an annual event for expats and internationals living in Tilburg and the surrounds. This year’s Spoorzone tour and borrel was organized by TIC, made possible through the combined efforts of Holland Expat Center South and Tilburg University, and generously sponsored by Gemeente Tilburg.

Guests are Welcome!

welcome-banner

Guests are always welcome at any #TilburgInternationalClub event. It’s a great way to get a feel for the club, our members and the types of events you can come to expect as a member.  In the past, many of our guests have become members after a full tíc experience!

Many expats feel, even after living in the Netherlands for a longer period of time, never fully welcomed into Dutch society and therefore, never feel an affinity with the culture. A key upside to being a guest of tíc, is getting out to meet locals, learning about the country, better understanding social routines and customs all within a supportive group of individuals and families with like circumstances.

Want to know more about attending a tíc event as a guest? Check out our Guests Welcome page for more details.  Have questions or already interested in one of our upcoming events? Just let us know at til.int.club@gmail.com!

We look forward to meeting you!

President’s Summer Send-off – July 2019

I’m sitting with my laptop outside enjoying this beautiful Dutch weather (no – I’m not kidding!) and reflecting on what an amazing club season we enjoyed.

We started with our best ever attended Welcome to Tilburg event to commemorate tíc’s 10th anniversary and finished up with another tícnic where everyone left full of good food and drink ready to start the summer!

And, in between those two fantastic events, we squeezed in borrels, sporting events, arts and crafts, walks, games and a whole lot more. One new addition to our agenda, was a charity walk to help refugees. It was a wonderful way for us to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate and, as a result, the board has decided to look for ways to raise money for a different charity every year. We haven’t made our final selection yet, so if you have ideas or causes that you feel passionate about, let us know. As your club continues to grow and flourish, so does the need to give back to those who could use a helping hand.

We are quite fortunate to enjoy the expat life and freely explore all that the world has to offer! I hope you take some pleasant memories of this past club season along with you as you embark on your summer adventures and I look forward to welcoming you all back in September!!

Wishing you sunny days,

Yolonda

Open volunteer position, Secretary/Membership

Interested in becoming more actively involved in the #tilburginternationalclub? This is your chance! We  currently have an open position for Secretary/Membership.

tilburg international club is a “vereniging” and is required to have a Board of Directors to steer activities of the club. Several board positions are essential to running the club including the position of Secretary. Anne van Oorschot just stepped down from the role after 4 years in the position (maximum years allowed according to our club constitution). So, we have an open spot and would very much appreciate some help in this area. (more…)

President’s message – May 2019

Spring is in the air! As the flowers begin to bloom and daylight stays with us into the evening hours, everyone just seems to be in better spirits. Although the club year will soon be coming to a close, there are still lots of things on the calendar to enjoy.

Your Events Team has done an outstanding job in their first season of bringing new, exciting things to the club calendar. And coming up, we have the ever-popular Pub Quiz to accompany our AGM, a gathering at the Tilburg Hap Stap Festival at the Interpolis, our annual tícnic, plus a sponsorship walking event, Nacht van de Vluchtelingen, to help refugees.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at an event soon to hear about you upcoming plans for the summer.  So, let’s get some fresh air and have some club fun together before the lazy days of summer arrive!!

Cheers,
Yolonda

Meet the board: Estela – Treasurer

Estela Highet

I moved to the Netherlands in April 2017. I’m originally from a small town near Santiago in Chili which, compared to any other city here, is not that small! I grew up my whole life in the same place, going for holidays to the same place as well until I felt I wanted and needed to see the world. That’s when I decided to go and study some of my university course in Canada, as an exchange student for a semester. I met amazing people from everywhere around the world and made good friends, but I also met an incredible Dutch man who is the reason why I’m currently living in Tilburg.

I studied business administration as my university degree and I did a master’s in economics in the same university, after finishing my studies in Canada. Since then, I’m always thinking about my next destination and even how difficult it can be to say good bye to your loved ones, living in a different culture is a tremendous opportunity that I think I’m experiencing at 100%.

I worked as a housekeeper at Mercure Hotel in Tilburg at the beginning of my life in Tilburg until I got a job at Rhenus where I’m currently working! I’ve met great colleagues, but I still believe that Tilburg International Club gave me the best friends I could have asked for while living here. I’ve met people of all ages but all with one thing in common: being an international in the Netherlands. Who else more than us knows how it is to live abroad? I’m not only happy about the fact that I discovered (well, my partner did) this club, but also, thankful and glad that I can also contribute to it!

President’s Holiday Greeting 2018

Yolonda van Riel

As I look out my office window and watch the rain continue to fall, I am searching for ideas to write in my next message. It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close. This past year was one of both joy and sadness (as are most years!) but as an expat so far away from home, losing a parent makes you acutely aware of just how far removed we are from our former life.

It is also, however, an opportunity to take stock of the wonderful treasures life as an expat has to offer. One of my “treasures” is being a member of the tic family. Our club has a special place in my heart and, in some respects, is my family abroad. With all the different nationalities, ages and personalities within tic, every event becomes a new experience and the possibility to make yet another friend.

Your events team is already planning for the second half of the club season and I am excited to see what they have in store for us in 2019. Whether you spend the holiday season here with your expat family or travel home to be with loved ones, I wish you and yours all the best with the hope that you make joyous memories to last a lifetime.

Happy Holidays!
