tíc at Hap Stap, rain or shine!

by Mala Raman

12 jun 2019. Despite the showers early on in the evening, tíc members ventured out for an evening of munching and chatting at the annual Tilburg Hap Stap Festival. Sixteen local restaurants showed off their best tapas-style dishes as tempting aromas drew in the masses. The event was made up of dozens of tents dotted throughout the Interpolis’ courtyard (near the Spoorlaan). tíc secured a table under the tents of De Carpacciobar.  Attendees sampled dishes such as fish and chips, steaks, burgers, sweet potato fries and more.

Coincidentally, the Mayor of Tilburg, Theo Weterings also chose to stop by De Carpacciobar and said a happy and welcoming hello to tíc. Nostalgically, the Mayor and our tíc president, Yolonda van Riel, recreated their 2018 Welcome to Tilburg event portrait.

Like every tilburg international club borrel, the first drink was provided by the club. Club members enjoyed their beverages along with the free samples of Schrobbeler being passed out to all event attendees. tíc members hung out together well past the official borrel time and continued to have a great time in the cool summer evening.

Day Pass to Sligro

Did you know that with the tíc membership card, you can get a day pass to shop at the Tilburg wholesale store, Sligro?

Sligro is a modern, volume-shopping warehouse that covers 11.000 m² and offers fresh produce, wine, food and food supply items. Typical clients of Sligro are businesses, restaurants and self-employed business owners that buy their supplies in bulk. Sligro also has in-store samples of many of their food items as well as product tasting evenings.

With the tíc membership card shown at the door*, our members can shop like the professionals or just stock up on kitchen favourites!

Check the Sligro website for information about their assortment and opening hours!

*Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to enter.

#TBT: Borrel at Hap Stap Festival

Tomorrow we’ll meet up again at the Hap Stap Festival. For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look back at the TIC experience from last year!

x—x—x—x—x—x

Review by Jessica Lipe. We met up for the opening evening for the 4-day Hap Stap Festival in Tilburg. This year was the 23rd year of Hap Stap and 16 local restaurants offered a sampling of their menu. Our group tried all kinds of delicious food, like samosa, ribs, shrimp and saffron risotto, and tuna. It was a great way to discover restaurants worth checking out in Tilburg. With new and old faces present, it was a pleasant evening spent chatting and tasting in the garden of Interpolis downtown.

Annual General Meeting and Pub Quiz review

17 May 2019. Review by Elaine Ferguson. A group of enthusiastic pub quizzers met at the Grand Café Esplanade, Tilburg University to test their general knowledge. The first 15 minutes of the evening was set aside for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) whereby Yolonda our President and Mala, our Communications and Outreach Coordinator informed us about the current state of affairs of the club – and we are doing really well and due to the concerted efforts of our Events team tíc has been able to welcome many new members this year! (read more about the meeting below!)

After the AGM had finished and having received a complimentary drink from tíc, we settled down to some serious quizzing. The teams were divided per category, so the first team to find their group received a bonus point.  The first round was general knowledge which including some pretty tricky questions such as *Which planet sits between Earth and Jupiter in its proximity to the Sun? There were questions for everyone including the picture round (name the three Princesses).    The Foodie round: Where do bagels originate? and for Travellers: What is the name of the airport in Belfast?  The quiz ended in a tie-breaker with team Foodie entering at the last minute with their bonus point and due to the knowledgeability of one team member managed to guess the approximate height of the Eifel Tower.

All in all, it was a fun evening and so well organized by the Events Team of Jessica, Anne-Lise and Molly that the owner of the Esplanade asked if they were willing to host another evening!!

*Answer: Mars

More about the AGM

Secretary/Membership:  We are in search of a replacement.  If you, or anyone you know, is interested in taking this open position, please let us know!

Membership: We have gained many new members this year, bringing our total to 128, a new club record! We represent 35 different nationalities so we are truly an international club! Our membership is split pretty evenly between Tilburg University employees and individual members.

Communications: We are diligently active on our website, as well as the social media outlets of  Facebook and Instagram to make our club activities more visible and easier for expats to find. We continue to have partnerships with Sligro, Holland Expat Center South and P&D Care to our list of partners to improve the expat experience of our members.

Events: We had a total of 32 events this year including Socials such as our smashing Welcome to Tilburg event,  tícMovieNight , tíc Book Club, Outings such as to the
DESTIL Trappers ice hockey game, Workshops and of course all of our annual events such as Annual Christmas Cookie Workshop. We are also doing our first charity event: Night of the Refugees. We are still looking for participants for the walk and donations. We have already started planning some great events for the new club year.

Finance: In tandem with increasing membership, we have also increased income more than 43% from last year. We also experienced a surge in in expenses mainly due to our 10th Year Anniversary Welcome Event (but well worth it!!) Our deficit is counterbalanced by a major subsidy received from Midpoint Brabant.

President’s message – May 2019

Spring is in the air! As the flowers begin to bloom and daylight stays with us into the evening hours, everyone just seems to be in better spirits. Although the club year will soon be coming to a close, there are still lots of things on the calendar to enjoy.

Your Events Team has done an outstanding job in their first season of bringing new, exciting things to the club calendar. And coming up, we have the ever-popular Pub Quiz to accompany our AGM, a gathering at the Tilburg Hap Stap Festival at the Interpolis, our annual tícnic, plus a sponsorship walking event, Nacht van de Vluchtelingen, to help refugees.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at an event soon to hear about you upcoming plans for the summer.  So, let’s get some fresh air and have some club fun together before the lazy days of summer arrive!!

Cheers,
Yolonda

#TBT: tíc Annual General Meeting and Pub Quiz

It’s once again time for our Annual General Meeting to inform our members about the health of the club, an update on current activities and our future plans. For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s look at our AGM and Pub Quiz from 2017.

18 May 2017. Review by Anne van Oorschot If you missed TIC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 18 May 2017 at the Grand Café Esplanade on the grounds of Tilburg University, you missed a great time! A great time at an AGM? Yes, you read correctly!

We had a nice turnout and, after a welcome introduction to our members and guests, we began the evening as we do every year, with a short presentation over the club and how we are performing.

tíc is doing well and we can look back on a very successful year full of many fun and interesting activities, with attendance being up from last year. With the Event Director position vacant for most of the year, the remaining Board members have shared the event planning and hosting duties which has been a challenge at times. We are thrilled that Andrew Kelly stepped forward to fill this position and we look forward to having him on the Board.

All board members are still in term, so no need for a vote but our treasurer, Emerald Busser, has vacated her position and we are in search of a replacement.  Due to her departure, we do not have an updated financial overview to present this evening. We will communicate that to our members at a later date.

Anne van Oorschot, Secretary/Membership, gave an update on the club’s membership. While we have lost some members, we have gained 9 new members this year, bringing our total to 31, up slightly from last year. While that may not seem like many, when adding in member’s partners and children – who are also TIC members! – the total number of expats we serve as a club is 66. We have 20 different nationalities in TIC so we are truly an international club! The vast majority of our members work full time and while Tilburg University is the employer for about a third of our members, the remaining members are employed by a variety of companies, or self-employed.

Mala Raman, Communications and Outreach, has worked hard this past year to increase our online visibility. With a big increase in postings on our website, the number of hits we have gotten has greatly increased! Mala is active on the TIC Facebook and Twitter accounts and we recently added an Instagram account to make our club activities more visible and easier for expats to find. We continue to have partnerships with Sligro, Holland Expat Center South and P&D Care, and have added Theaters Tilburg to our list of partners to improve the expat experience of our members.

Mala also reported on the activities we have organized in the past year – a whopping 34 events – up from 26 events last year! Member Coree Forman has breathed new life into our monthly borrels, and TICMovie group has met more frequently as well. The TIC Book Club continues to have a strong and consistent membership and will have met 8 times by the summer. We visited 2 sporting events this year – the
DESTIL Trappers ice hockey, and Willem II soccer and both teams won specially for TIC!? 😉 We have a number of annual events – Sinterklaas party, Annual Christmas Cookie Workshop, Annual Holiday Dinner and the TICnic – and many new outings and events, such as our visit to a cheese farm, a chocolate making workshop, a ballet performance and a lecture on the Dutch Parliamentary election, to name a few. Next year will mark TIC’s 10th Anniversary and we have already started planning some great events for the new club year. We closed with an encouragement for members to let us know what they’d like to do – after all, it’s YOUR club.

Then came the fun part! Three teams battled it out in the chance to be crowned the Winners of The Pub Quiz.

Presented by Andrew Kelly, the questions were challenging and informative, complete with drinks, and snacks. Questions flew over 4 rounds of play. What a drama!! We had bartering for partial points, we had contesting of the answers (even though they were right there in black and white), we had debating amongst the teams and we had to do all this without looking at our phones for help! In the end, after much laughter, eating and drinking, a winning team emerged and went home with gift certificates from Intermezzo, while the Losers of the Pub Quiz went home with a “beautiful” magnet.

St. Patrick’s Day celebration

2df40af2-d44b-4515-b639-d504ee88d96516 Mar 2019. Review by Jessica Lipe. The Saturday night before St. Patrick’s Day, a group of tíc members dressed mostly in green gathered at the most Irish place in Tilburg- Ruby’s Irish pub to raise a glass of Guinness in celebration of Irish heritage.

When we arrived at the pub, we caught the final moments of the tense 6 Nations Rugby championship (Scotland v England). As the match ended in a draw amidst a chorus of boos and cheers, we began our night of chatting and getting to know newer members of the club.

Laughter and drinks were a plenty. Later in the evening, there was live music, and while it was not such great music, it did not hinder our good time.

#TBT: St. Patrick’s Day happy hour

St. Pat 5This weekend we’ll meet up again for our annual St. Patrick’s Day borrel.  For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look at our gathering from 2 years ago!

x—x—x—x—x—x

Review by Andrew Kelly. This year was a special year as St. Patrick’s day, the national holiday of my home country, the Republic of Ireland, coincided with a Friday. So, the TIC team decided to combine the monthly borrel with a St. Patrick’s day celebration and, of course, have it at Ruby’s Irish bar.

Some of you might ask who is St. Patrick and did he invent Guinness? Well, no, he was a Welsh priest who brought Christianity to Ireland after the fall of the Roman empire. If you want more info on this, check out this Wikipage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick

So, St. Patrick’s day 2017 started like all big parties with the decoration in the party area in Ruby’s bar. Snacks were supplied and from 17:00 to 18:00, it was two pints of Guinness for the price of one. As they say back in my home town “ happy days”. Once every one had arrived, the guests were invited to learn how to make a baby Guinness which seem to have gotten the party started.

As everyone was enjoying themselves, I completed one of my bucket list items and that was to play in an Irish bar on St. Patrick’s Day. I only managed to do 3 songs, but the crowed seemed to enjoy it. The rest of the night was spent mixing with other pub goers in a Irish celebration were everyone was welcome.

A Merry Christmas Borrel at Café Bakker

by Mala Raman

21 Dec 2018. On a cold, but clear night, our members once again met up at Cafe Bakker.  For most, it was the end of work for the year, so everyone was looking forward to socializing and snacking during our traditional Christmas borrel.  Every year we ask attendees to wear their best “ugly sweater.” It was interesting to see what our members’ ideas were of an “ugly” sweater.

Despite the overcrowding around the Korte Heuvel along all the terraces, it was pleasantly cozy inside the cafe where members shared their happiness of starting the holiday season and discussing Christmas and New Year’s plans.

A borrel was the perfect way to bid everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Destil (Tilburg) Trappers are a professional ice hockey club based in Tilburg and were founded on 21 October 1938. They were officially recognized by the National Federation on 18 January 1939 and were crowned Eredivisie champions for the first time in the 1946-1947 season. While they have always played in the highest league level in the Netherlands, it offered little competition. Beginning with the 2015-2016 season, the Trappers started playing in the German League, Oberliga Nord. (You can see their season schedule here.) A big celebration was held for the team in the middle of town last year when they finished their 2017-2018 season in 1st place!

This year, we will go see the Destil Trappers vs. Hannover Indians. There are 20 available seats. Tickets will be reserved on a first come first serve basis!! In case you’re wondering, this is a great activity for kids, as well! (The crowd is well behaved and the game is action-packed!!)

More details on when and where exactly to meet will be sent closer to the game itself. After the game, we hope to raise a glass together to celebrate their victory…

TBT: The TIC Annual Dinner 2015

This weekend we’ll meet up again for our annual Holiday Dinner where members have a chance to wish each other a Happy New Year while enjoying a bite to eat together.  For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look at gathering from 2015 at the Square!

x—x—x—x—x—x

by Jean-Francois Hennart

Jan 2015. This year the dinner was at Square, a mere slip and slide across an icy Heuvel. I admit that I wasn’t expecting a lot from a Lounge-Club-Restaurant, too much like never-ever-good dinner theater, but on the night was disabused of my spread-too-thin preconception. Our coats were deftly taken and the owner was pouring us a welcome drink before our cheeks had lost their winter-wind glow. The décor at Square is loft-simple, the lighting is kind, but not dim. Whole-group menus are hard on a chef, but the fresh starter and simple dessert seemed to go down well, as did the well-chosen and generously-served wines. Sondra and I hedged our bets when it came to selecting a meat-or-fish main, but need not have. My venison was just-right pink, and her cod with sauerkraut (a combination we intend to crib) well-nigh James Beard worthy. No doubt, we will again “be there”.

Never been to the post-holiday dinner? Are you thinking it might be like a Sierra Seniors do, with awards handed out, speeches made? Wrong. I’m tempted to compare the TIC answer to the winter blues to My Dinner with Andre, because what makes for a good time around the table is, if I can borrow from Roger Ebert, “conversation, in which the real subject is the tone, the mood, the energy.” The tone is set by mutually-held curiosity about what lies beyond our own national borders and by shared determination to make the most of living in the Netherlands; the mood is sometimes jubilant, sometimes mellow; and the energy comes from within.

So, if you weren’t there, you missed something. Now you could wait until January rolls around again, or long before then you could take part in a different event. You might just find yourself, as we did last night, caught up in a wide-ranging conversation touching on learning to waterski, a Lang Lang concert in Amsterdam, raising bilingual kids, a selfie with Henry Kissinger, Fontys fledgling Academy of Circus and Performing Arts, trailing penguins in Patagonia …
