#FlashBackFriday: Pub Quiz / Annual General Meeting

Tilburg International ClubNext week we’ll have our rescheduled Annual General Meeting and Pub Quiz from last May. For #FlashBackFriday, let’s take a look back one of our past pub quiz evenings!

14.05.2015 If you missed TIC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 14th, you missed a great time! A great time at an AGM? Yes, you read correctly!

tíc Board of Directors hard at work!

We had a nice turnout and, after a welcome coffee with sweets, we began the evening as we do every year, with a short presentation over the club and how we are performing. All board members are still in term, so no need for a vote but our treasurer, Yiyi Bai, will be leaving us at the end of the club year and we are in search of a replacement. Next, Anne shared our membership numbers which are slightly up from last year but still considerably lower than when we had the first influx of university members. The board is working hard by visiting companies, international schools and using social media to attract more members. We have also printed new flyers and business cards with our new logo and are busy handing those out as well. Yiyi then presented the financials and showed that we are doing well keeping within our budget and still offering many incentives to our members. Lastly, Patricia gave an overview of all of the events so far this club season complete with photo’s. You can view the presentation here for the complete details.

Pub Quiz competition was fierce!

Then came the fun part! Our originally planned speaker had to cancel due to illness so, at the last minute, we improvised and held a reception complete with drinks, snacks and a pub quiz. We divided up into three teams while Patricia asked questions over 4 rounds of play. What a drama!! We had bartering for partial points, we had contesting of the answers (even though they were right there in black and white), we had debating amongst the teams and we had to do all this without looking at our phones for help! In the end, after much laughter, eating and drinking, a winning team emerged and went home with gift certificates from Bagels & Beans, while the losing team went home with a “beautiful” magnet. But everyone went home with homemade macaroons from Patricia which – I must say – were absolutely delicious!!

One last note: If you or someone you know would be interested in filling the board position of treasurer, please let us know. This is an integral part of our board and we would love to welcome you to the team.  We realize these positions are voluntary and, while participation is vital, we try to keep the commitment to a level that is “doable” in our busy lives!

tícWalkie Talkies in Koningshoeven

3 Nov. 2019. Here are a few reviews from our walkers!

I really enjoyed getting to know more fellow club-members during the walk. I still had a great time despite the rain, so that just shows how fun it was 🙂
-Katie

A lovely rainy walk  with a fascinating bit of local history thrown in.
-Wendy

“Even though the weather was not so promising, everyone showed up and brought a good attitude. Start feeling the dutch autum-ish weather, Welkom naar Nederland.”
-Lily

We started with 15 enthusiastic walkers at the La Trappe Brouwerij for a 8km loop around the areas of Koningshoeven and Moerenburg. Despite the soggy weather, everyone had a good time
chatting
and getting to know one another. Afterwards, we found a spot
inside the brewery to have a drink together afterwards.
-Mala

Take a look at some of our other fun walks!

Worstenbrood (Sausage roll) Workshop Review

by Rochelle Buhr

26 Nov 2019. Have you ever had fresh, warm worstenbrood, a Tilburg speciality?Better yet, have you ever made them? A lucky 8 of us did on Tuesday at
De Smaeck Bakkerij in Berkol-Enschot.

Although probably not something you’d make at home, we had a great time
putting them together with the professionals at the bakery!

by Mala Raman. We had another great day on 9 September 2017 for our annual Welcome to Tilburg event that officially opens our club year!

Every year we pick a different area of Tilburg to present to new and established members of the international community in Noord Brabant.  This year we focused on the Nieuwlandstraat in the city center. The streets in and around this area are full of eclectic cafes, bakeries and shops … something a little different from the mainstream shopping area. We had another beautiful day on 24 September 2016 for our annual Welcome Event that officially opens our club year! This year’s theme was the Puishaven Quest where we had to search the area for answers to questions about the many sights and scenes around the Puishaven in Tilburg.

To start the afternoon, everyone gathered at the eclectic HeAVENs Kitchen for coffee and apple pie as we were welcomed to the city by Tilburg’s vice mayor, Erik de Ridder. After the warm welcome, we divided up into teams and headed out for the adventure! As the teams made their way back to the final destination, Undici Keukens, (some still with chocolate on their face from the free bon bon at Huize Geers Chocolatier!) they were welcomed by a cold beverage and turned in their answer sheets. We had a lot of fun socializing at Undici while enjoying drinks and snacks provided by the biological restaurant, Eethuis Twentig while waiting for the winners to be announced. The winning team was “Team Ellis” and each team member received a gift certificate for ice cream at Porto Koffie en Ijs – an adorable little shop in the Puishaven selling specialty coffee and ice cream.

We ended the afternoon with the grand prize drawing of a 50 euro gift certificate to restaurant Bij Vermeer. It was a great afternoon meeting new people, catching up with old friends and just having fun!
