Resources for Expats Needed!

Did you know that we have a page on our website dedicated to national, regional and local expat resources?

This page covers the basics for Dutch life, but we’re looking to expand what we can share.

Do you know of some great resources that would help other expats with their lives here abroad, locally and/or nationally? Do you know of any expat-owned businesses that the international community can support? Know of any great websites that every expat should visit?

We love to hear from you so, send us your suggestions!

Join Book Club!

Are you up for a good discussion with a group of friendly book-lovers? Would you like to expand your reading horizons by reading a book you may not have chosen yourself? Do you want to spend a relaxed evening chatting about a book, and often many other life topics, with a cup of tea, coffee or perhaps glass of wine in your hand? Join tíc’s Book Club where we meet up approximately once every 6 weeks to discuss the latest book pick by the group.

At the end of every Book Club meeting, one member presents three book suggestions to the group. The group votes on their favorite book choice and the group reads that book for the next book club meeting. Someone from the group volunteers to bring the new book selections for the following meeting. Locations and days of every meeting vary to allow the maximum number of book lovers to attend.

New members are welcome to join our book club at any time.  If you are a member of the tilburg international club, attendance is free.  If you would like to attend as a guest, the cost is €5,00 p.p. (READ about how this can be pro-rated towards your membership fee.)

Would you like to join us at our next Book Club meeting?  Let us know!

Guests are Welcome!

welcome-banner

Guests are always welcome at any #TilburgInternationalClub event. It’s a great way to get a feel for the club, our members and the types of events you can come to expect as a member.  In the past, many of our guests have become members after a full tíc experience!

Many expats feel, even after living in the Netherlands for a longer period of time, never fully welcomed into Dutch society and therefore, never feel an affinity with the culture. A key upside to being a guest of tíc, is getting out to meet locals, learning about the country, better understanding social routines and customs all within a supportive group of individuals and families with like circumstances.

Want to know more about attending a tíc event as a guest? Check out our Guests Welcome page for more details.  Have questions or already interested in one of our upcoming events? Just let us know at til.int.club@gmail.com!

We look forward to meeting you!

Jobs in the Netherlands

Did you know that TIC has a dedicated JOBS page to help expats find jobs in the Netherlands, and specifically in and around the Tilburg area?

We get many requests all year round for help with job searches. More and more job searches are done through social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook as well as through the professional networking site LinkedIn. In-person networking is also an important factor in getting a foot in the door. tíc can help you build your social and professional network through its many activities that bring expats together.

Many job listings are posted on Twitter asking for candidates who speak a foreign language that isn’t Dutch. You can follow @tilintclub to get regular notices of vacancies. You can also do various searches to find job vacancies (for example, job vacancy Tilburg).  Many groups such as @nativespeakerss, @IamExpatJobs, @jobportaal and @BlueLynxJobs all post their vacancies several times a day.

Facebook is also worth investigating for jobs, specifically groups that are dedicated to posting position for jobs in the Netherlands, such as English speaking Jobs & Events in the Netherlands. Take a look today!

President’s Summer Send-off – July 2019

I’m sitting with my laptop outside enjoying this beautiful Dutch weather (no – I’m not kidding!) and reflecting on what an amazing club season we enjoyed.

We started with our best ever attended Welcome to Tilburg event to commemorate tíc’s 10th anniversary and finished up with another tícnic where everyone left full of good food and drink ready to start the summer!

And, in between those two fantastic events, we squeezed in borrels, sporting events, arts and crafts, walks, games and a whole lot more. One new addition to our agenda, was a charity walk to help refugees. It was a wonderful way for us to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate and, as a result, the board has decided to look for ways to raise money for a different charity every year. We haven’t made our final selection yet, so if you have ideas or causes that you feel passionate about, let us know. As your club continues to grow and flourish, so does the need to give back to those who could use a helping hand.

We are quite fortunate to enjoy the expat life and freely explore all that the world has to offer! I hope you take some pleasant memories of this past club season along with you as you embark on your summer adventures and I look forward to welcoming you all back in September!!

Wishing you sunny days,

Yolonda

ticnic a success!

by Mala Raman

30 Jun 2019. This year we had perfect weather for our annual picnic. To our regular participants, our once a year, pre-summer gathering is known as the tícnic. In a not too warm, not too cold outdoor venue, a big crowd of tíc members and guests came together to once again help bring the club season to a close.

In the middle of a lush green park on the campus of Tilburg University, everyone happily sat at the picnic tables or on the grass to enjoy a good old-fashioned cookout. Thanks to many of our male members who “manned” the grill, there were hamburgers, veggie burgers, braadworst and kip saté to be gobbled up. Members also brought many delicious types of salad or dessert to share.

No tícnic is complete without some fun group activity. This year we had a rousing game of “Finska” (an ancient Finnish game) that consists of 12 wooden pins arranged into a group. A throwing log (called the Mölkky) is thrown underarm in an attempt to knock down pins to score exactly 50 points. If points are scored that causes the score to exceed 50, the player (or team) has their score reset to 25. The winner is the first to achieve the 50 points. Judging by the theatrics, it was a nail-biter until the end!

All in all, we had a fantastic day; it was great to have so many of our members join this year’s outdoor festivities.  To all who attended: we hope to see you again in the upcoming club year. To those who couldn’t make it this year: come by next year and share in the fun!

#TBT: Another fun TICnic!

In just a couple of days we will once again meet up for our annual “TICnic” on the lovely grounds of Tilburg University.  For Throwback Thursday, let’s take a look the fun and games from last year!

x–x–x–x–x–x–x

by Anne van OorschotI am back home after attending the annual tíc picnic…tícNic and it was, as usual, really fun. A couple of the guys did a great job of grilling all the different meats and vegetarian options and I feasted (OK, a bit too much!) on all the delicious and unique salads people had brought.
