President’s Summer Send-off – July 2019

I’m sitting with my laptop outside enjoying this beautiful Dutch weather (no – I’m not kidding!) and reflecting on what an amazing club season we enjoyed.

We started with our best ever attended Welcome to Tilburg event to commemorate tíc’s 10th anniversary and finished up with another tícnic where everyone left full of good food and drink ready to start the summer!

And, in between those two fantastic events, we squeezed in borrels, sporting events, arts and crafts, walks, games and a whole lot more. One new addition to our agenda, was a charity walk to help refugees. It was a wonderful way for us to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate and, as a result, the board has decided to look for ways to raise money for a different charity every year. We haven’t made our final selection yet, so if you have ideas or causes that you feel passionate about, let us know. As your club continues to grow and flourish, so does the need to give back to those who could use a helping hand.

We are quite fortunate to enjoy the expat life and freely explore all that the world has to offer! I hope you take some pleasant memories of this past club season along with you as you embark on your summer adventures and I look forward to welcoming you all back in September!!

Wishing you sunny days,

Yolonda

ticnic a success!

by Mala Raman

30 Jun 2019. This year we had perfect weather for our annual picnic. To our regular participants, our once a year, pre-summer gathering is known as the tícnic. In a not too warm, not too cold outdoor venue, a big crowd of tíc members and guests came together to once again help bring the club season to a close.

In the middle of a lush green park on the campus of Tilburg University, everyone happily sat at the picnic tables or on the grass to enjoy a good old-fashioned cookout. Thanks to many of our male members who “manned” the grill, there were hamburgers, veggie burgers, braadworst and kip saté to be gobbled up. Members also brought many delicious types of salad or dessert to share.

No tícnic is complete without some fun group activity. This year we had a rousing game of “Finska” (an ancient Finnish game) that consists of 12 wooden pins arranged into a group. A throwing log (called the Mölkky) is thrown underarm in an attempt to knock down pins to score exactly 50 points. If points are scored that causes the score to exceed 50, the player (or team) has their score reset to 25. The winner is the first to achieve the 50 points. Judging by the theatrics, it was a nail-biter until the end!

All in all, we had a fantastic day; it was great to have so many of our members join this year’s outdoor festivities.  To all who attended: we hope to see you again in the upcoming club year. To those who couldn’t make it this year: come by next year and share in the fun!

#TBT: Another fun TICnic!

In just a couple of days we will once again meet up for our annual “TICnic” on the lovely grounds of Tilburg University.  For Throwback Thursday, let’s take a look the fun and games from last year!

by Anne van OorschotI am back home after attending the annual tíc picnic…tícNic and it was, as usual, really fun. A couple of the guys did a great job of grilling all the different meats and vegetarian options and I feasted (OK, a bit too much!) on all the delicious and unique salads people had brought.

President’s message – May 2019

Spring is in the air! As the flowers begin to bloom and daylight stays with us into the evening hours, everyone just seems to be in better spirits. Although the club year will soon be coming to a close, there are still lots of things on the calendar to enjoy.

Your Events Team has done an outstanding job in their first season of bringing new, exciting things to the club calendar. And coming up, we have the ever-popular Pub Quiz to accompany our AGM, a gathering at the Tilburg Hap Stap Festival at the Interpolis, our annual tícnic, plus a sponsorship walking event, Nacht van de Vluchtelingen, to help refugees.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at an event soon to hear about you upcoming plans for the summer.  So, let’s get some fresh air and have some club fun together before the lazy days of summer arrive!!

Cheers,
Yolonda

President’s Holiday Greeting 2018

Yolonda van Riel

As I look out my office window and watch the rain continue to fall, I am searching for ideas to write in my next message. It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close. This past year was one of both joy and sadness (as are most years!) but as an expat so far away from home, losing a parent makes you acutely aware of just how far removed we are from our former life.

It is also, however, an opportunity to take stock of the wonderful treasures life as an expat has to offer. One of my “treasures” is being a member of the tic family. Our club has a special place in my heart and, in some respects, is my family abroad. With all the different nationalities, ages and personalities within tic, every event becomes a new experience and the possibility to make yet another friend.

Your events team is already planning for the second half of the club season and I am excited to see what they have in store for us in 2019. Whether you spend the holiday season here with your expat family or travel home to be with loved ones, I wish you and yours all the best with the hope that you make joyous memories to last a lifetime.

Happy Holidays!

President’s message – Oct 2018

The leaves are changing color, everyone is back at work or school and tic’s 10th  Anniversary season is well underway. Even after a hugely successful welcome event, where we welcomed and entertained over 100 people, there was no time off for your board to relax. We quickly jumped in to the club season with a brewery tour, book club, movie night and a Thursday evening borrel.

The newly formed events team has breathed new life into our planning sessions and have come up with some creative ideas to keep your social calendar full. From fall picnics and ghost tours, to board game afternoons and attending live sporting events, there is definitely something that will appeal to your own idea of fun. This group is doing an outstanding job and we are so pleased to have them on the board. It won’t be long until we release the planned events for the second half of the season so be sure check out the website and follow us on social media to keep up with the busy schedule and join in on the fun! I look forward to seeing many of you at a tic event soon!

President’s message – June 2018

What a whirlwind of activity and changes we had during this club season! We visited museums, went on city tours, attended a real German Christmas market and had a wonderful art presentation! Those were only some of the fun things we enjoyed next to our regular events like borrels, book club and movie night!

There were also some significant board changes this year. An Event Team (led by Jessica Lipe-Swart together with Molly Johnson and Anne-Lise Artaud) was added to help alleviate some of the workload as well as offer even more diverse activities.

Estela Highet Garcia will be replacing Betty Wangsawidjaja as Treasurer. Anne van Oorschot, founder of the club and who currently holds the position of board secretary, is also stepping down from the board. Melissa Donders was voted in unanimously during our AGM as our new club secretary. I want to personally thank Anne and Betty for all they have done for the club. They started out as my fellow club and board members but I’m happy that true friendships have developed along the way. Also, I want to welcome our new board members and wish them lots of success and fun in their new positions!

TIC is also celebrating its ten-year club anniversary this year and preparation has already begun for a celebration to coincide with our annual Welcome Event coming up after the summer break. It is indeed busy but exciting times for your club. So … wherever your travels may take you this summer, I wish you warm, sunny weather but most of all wonderful, memorable moments with family and friends!

Happy Summer!

Another fun TICnic!

I am back home after attending the annual TIC picnic…TICnic and it was, as usual, really fun. Jasper and Jonas did a great job of grilling all the different meats and vegetarian options and I feasted (OK, a bit too much!) on all the delicious and unique salads people had brought.

There were also interesting desserts, with several delicious “ethnic recipes” – like making a little trip around the world while staying right in Tilburg 🙂

After our meal, the new Event Team had a fun photo scavenger hunt planned. There were teams of adults and kids scurrying around trying to complete their list of tasks. The team that completed all of their “tasks” and finished first as well as most creatively was declared the winner.

Every year, we take a moment to give a big Thank You to the TIC Board Members who work hard to make sure TIC remains an interesting, educational and fun club for its members. And, after 10 years, I am leaving the TIC Board (but not the club!) and it was nice to take a moment to say a “proper” goodbye to our members.

After the inspired competition, great food and good company, most of our group stayed to enjoy the rest of the afternoon in the sunny weather while catching up with their TIC friends. A fitting close to another fun TIC year.

Our great new Event Team is already hard at work planning many fun activities for the coming club year (1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019). They have lots of new and interesting ideas, but old favorites such as book club, movie nights and borrels will continue, as well.

We have a very special Welcome Event planned for Saturday, 8 September 2018 to mark TIC’s 10th anniversary, so jot it down on your calendar and plan to attend!

In the meantime, I and the rest of the Board wish you a good summer – full of sunny weather, interesting activities and relaxation.  We look forward to seeing you at a TIC event in the near future.

No TICnic is complete without some fun group activities. This year we had a “TIC-athalon” that had 5 teams racing around trying to accumulate as many points as possible in the Great Egg Race, TIC Tac Toe darts, Obstacle course, Mini golf, Jump Rope, TICpic, Bowling, Bean Bag Toss, Pass the Parcel and Air Guitar.

All in all, we had a fantastic day. To all who attended: we hope to see you again in the upcoming club year. To those who stayed home or couldn’t make it this year: come by next year and share in the fun!

President’s message

Spring is in the air! As the warm weather (hopefully!) approaches, most of us begin to slowly come out of hibernation and our thoughts turn to getting out and having some fun. So … take a big stretch and shake off the winter cobwebs because TIC has lots of events in store for you before the club season ends! There are borrels, books and bowling activities just to name a few. And, of course, one of the high points of the season … the annual TICnic.

Your board is also hard at work planning our Welcome Event where we will celebrate our 10-year anniversary after the summer break. We are also making a few changes to the board and will soon be introducing our “Event Team”. By utilizing a small team, the workload can be spread more evenly which results in more exciting events for you to enjoy. Break out the sunglasses and join us for the many things we have planned. Don’t forget to check the website for updates and newly added events!

Cheers,
Yolonda

President’s Holiday Greeting

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is upon us and as I sit here writing this message, my mind keeps wandering back to all of things I need to do in preparation for the upcoming festivities. Like most of my fellow TIC members, my planning involves multiple countries and lots of traveling. Expats are a unique group – we embrace the many different traditions there are to enjoy and realize each one broadens our world and opens us up to new and different perspectives. TIC is here to help you enjoy some of these traditions as well. We will again be hosting the annual Christmas cookie workshop, borrels and, of course the holiday dinner in January to celebrate a new year. Your board is also planning the second half of the club year so be sure and visit the website for all the fun activities we have in store for you. Whether your holiday plans include traveling abroad or staying in the Netherlands … I wish you all a joyful time with family and friends and look forward to seeing you at a TIC event soon!

Happy Holidays!

TIC President’s message – July

Yolonda van Riel

What a whirlwind TIC season we had this year! It seems like I was just sitting down to write the “welcome back” message. We had so many fun excursions this year such as concerts, dinners, tours of local “gems”, borrels and movies just to name a few. And, of course, we ended the club year on a high note with one of our most popular events – the TICnic!

The ever revolving door of TIC is always bittersweet as we said some tearful goodbyes to some as they moved on to new adventures and happily welcomed new expats and their families to TIC. Even though the club season has officially ended, your TIC board is still busy behind the scenes planning September’s Welcome Event and filling up the rest of the club season with new and exciting events. Wherever your summer travels take you, I wish you lots of fun, sun and relaxation with family and friends. I look forward to welcoming you all back in September!

Warm regards,
Yolonda

TICNic 2015

article by Thijs Busser

June. The sixth month of the year happens to be my favorite month of the year. The weather is usually pretty good, everything looks fresh and green, and it is the month we have the TICNic! The TICNic, that moment where we say goodbye to the club year, look forward to our holidays, and enjoy each other’s company while eating a wide variety of dishes.

As per usual we conveniend at the Tilburg University campus where we have picnic tables, a good place for the grill, and a wonderful field for our (youngest) members to play games and do some sports. Also as per usual we had great weather. The days leading up to the BBQ weren’t that good but on the day itself we had that wonderful weather we’ve come to expect when we bring out our grillmaster Peter to do his thing.

Our event director, Patricia, out did herself and organised many fun activities to keep the TICKids and adults entertained and brought out the competitor in us all. There was one particular game of making the longest line of stuff which inspired some great team work and ingenuitive thinking from our members. Pieces of string, badminton rackets, clothing, and human beings wered used to try and make the longest line.

Of course there was also plenty of time to relax, catch up, enjoy the nice weather, and of course eat. Everyone brought a dish for the BBQ and thus we had a wide range of appetizers, salads and sweets. Each year everyone tries their best to bring something yummy and this year was no exception. I think almost all the food was finished by the time we packed up.

If you were there, thank you for making this one of the best events. If you could not attend, clear your weekends in June 2016 so you can attend and close with us, what I am sure will be, another awesome club year!
