#FBF: Boys in the Boat book review

boys-in-the-boat

Next week we will be meeting for our next book club; a gathering that sometimes has intense debates, but is always a lot of fun. For #FlashBackFriday, let’s take a look at a book club review from 2016!

by Anne van Oorschot

27 Sept 2016. The first meeting of tíc readers starting with chatting about summer vacations (and the first debate of the US Presidential election!) and then we settled down to talk about The Boys in the Boat.  This non-fiction book, written by Daniel James Brown (not to be confused with the Dan Brown of The Divinci Code) is about the 8 man rowing shell from University of Washington that went on to become the US’s Olympic entry in the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics – Hitler’s Olympics!

The story is told mainly from (more…)

#TBT: Borrel at De Pont

pont-1

Tomorrow we’ll be hosting another fun borrel at Havana. For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look back at one of our borrels from 2017!

by Anne van Oorschot

10 things I learned at the TIC borrel on February 17th at De Pont:

One: Modern Art museum De Pont is located in a former wool spinning factory and the large light spaces and intimate “wool rooms” offer a good setting in which to view modern art.

Two: The museum is named for the businessman Jan de Pont (1915-1987) who left a large sum of money after his death for the creation of a museum of modern art. The museum receives no government subsidy and operates solely on de Pont’s legacy. (more…)

President’s Message – Mar 2020

Here we are in March already  … my, how time flies! I would like to use this platform just to let you know how dedicated and excited your Board is for the second half of this club season. There are the typical things on our agenda but what I’m most excited about is the May Market event for charity where our members chose Make-A-Wish Nederland as the foundation we want to sponsor this season.

tícMovie Night: 1917 Review

by Anne van Oorschot

31 Jan 2020. On the last day of January, we had the first movie night of 2020. ☺ tíc members met at Pathé to view 1917 – a new movie about the First World War.

For those who have not seen this award-winning film, director Sam Mendes filmed in the “one-shot” format, stretching it out to feature length.  Several takes and set-ups are seamlessly conjoined to give the appearance of a continuous cinematic point-of-view, albeit with periodic ellipses. The result is an immersive drama that leads the viewer through the trenches and battlefields of northern France, as two young British soldiers attempt to make their way through enemy lines on 6 April 1917. DESTIL Trappers win again!

by Mala Raman.

16 Feb 2020. On a bright but windy February day, a large crowd of tíc members met to watch the three-time Oberlina Champion ice hockey team potentially make their way to the play-offs again this year. The DESTIL Trappers, coached by Bo Subr, swept the ice with Krefelder EV ’81 in their home game Sunday afternoon with a final score of 9 – 0, their 5th shut out of the season.

This match was an action-packed game where (more…)

#TBT: tícMovie Night: Loving Vincent

Tomorrow night we’ll meet up for another tícMovie Night.  For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look back at the Cinecitta movie “Loving Vincent”!

x—x—x—x—x—x

by Yolonda van Riel

27 Oct 2017. Loving Vincent was chosen for October’s movie night. A nice group gathered, all curious about what to expect from this film. There was actually quite a bit of discussion before it even started. “How in the world can they make a decent movie using paintings?” “ I wonder if it will have a cartoon feel?” “I’m sure I’ll either love it or hate it!” (more…)

tíc Annual Holiday Dinner at Anvers

by Dagmara Gielen-Bernacka

11 Jan 2020. The inauguration of a new tíc calendar year took place in the lovely restaurant Anvers, situated in the centre of Tilburg.

And yes, we were having a blast!

The club members showed up with quite a representation; there were even some new faces. It’s always brilliant to meet the newcomers and I was happy to be able to chat with a couple of them.

We got an absolutely posh treatment, since effectively the whole 1st floor of the restaurant was exclusively ours and the staff did everything they could to make us feel at home. We got a round of a good ole prosecco that accompanied the toast and new years wishes from our charming president, Yolonda. (more…)
