Meet the board! tíc Treasurer

Dietrich Haas

In the summer of 2019, I was lucky that my German company offered me an expat position responsible for our internal accounting at our Tilburg automotive production plant. Since I had been abroad several times during my studies and for work before, I did not hesitate to accept this offer. I was keen on learning about our neighbouring country which I had only known until then for our close rivalry in soccer and for the constant flow of camper vans on our highways.

As to be expected, right from the start, every superficial stereotype was blown away and I really fell in love with the Dutch way of life, the people and the city. TIC had a significant share in this, providing a lot of helpful information in the beginning.

Meet the board! tíc President

Tilburg International Club Treasurer

tíc President, Katie Schweitzer

I have been living in the Netherlands since Aug 2017. I am originally from the US. I was raised outside of Philadelphia, PA, but moved to Washington, DC for my bachelor’s degree and then worked there for 5 years before moving to the Netherlands.

I knew I had wanted to move to Europe at some point. I had been going to Ireland to visit family – my mother is Irish – since I was a kid. But a study abroad semester in Germany really left a lasting impression. Not only did I love the lifestyle, I loved being able to travel to so many different countries, and experience different cultures, with only a short plane or train ride. (more…)

Meet the board! Events Coordinator

Tilburg International Club Events Team

Lily Gonzalez, Events Team

I grew up in the northern part of Mexico (Baja California). Since I was young, I was really interested in other cultures just by listening to people talking in their own language (even though I did not understand a word) or reading books where the story was somewhere in Europe. This gave me the idea that it would be nice to live somewhere outside Mexico, somewhere in Europe.

It was in August 2016 when my dream to live in Europe came true and I had the opportunity to do my Masters in Geo-Information Science at Wageningen University (NL). During my studies, I learned about other cultures, taste traditional dishes from those countries and I discovered more cities in the Netherlands. Moreover, I realized how easy it was to travel to other countries close by and “just like that” I felt in love with the country (although not with its weather but that is another story) and I have lived in the Netherlands since then!

Meet the board! tíc Treasurer

Estela Highet

I moved to the Netherlands in April 2017. I’m originally from a small town near Santiago in Chili which, compared to any other city here, is not that small! I grew up my whole life in the same place, going for holidays to the same place as well until I felt I wanted and needed to see the world.

That’s when I decided to go and study some of my university course in Canada, as an exchange student for a semester. I met amazing people from everywhere around the world and made good friends, but I also met an incredible Dutch man who is the reason why I’m currently living in Tilburg.

I studied business administration as my university degree and I did a master’s in economics in the same university, after finishing my studies in Canada. Since then, I’m always thinking about my next destination and even how difficult it can be to say good bye to your loved ones, living in a different culture is a tremendous opportunity that I think I’m experiencing at 100%.

President’s Summer Send-off – July 2019

I’m sitting with my laptop outside enjoying this beautiful Dutch weather (no – I’m not kidding!) and reflecting on what an amazing club season we enjoyed.

We started with our best ever attended Welcome to Tilburg event to commemorate tíc’s 10th anniversary and finished up with another tícnic where everyone left full of good food and drink ready to start the summer!

And, in between those two fantastic events, we squeezed in borrels, sporting events, arts and crafts, walks, games and a whole lot more. One new addition to our agenda, was a charity walk to help refugees. It was a wonderful way for us to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate and, as a result, the board has decided to look for ways to raise money for a different charity every year. We haven’t made our final selection yet, so if you have ideas or causes that you feel passionate about, let us know. As your club continues to grow and flourish, so does the need to give back to those who could use a helping hand.

We are quite fortunate to enjoy the expat life and freely explore all that the world has to offer! I hope you take some pleasant memories of this past club season along with you as you embark on your summer adventures and I look forward to welcoming you all back in September!!

Wishing you sunny days,

Yolonda

President’s Holiday Greeting 2018

Yolonda van Riel

As I look out my office window and watch the rain continue to fall, I am searching for ideas to write in my next message. It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close. This past year was one of both joy and sadness (as are most years!) but as an expat so far away from home, losing a parent makes you acutely aware of just how far removed we are from our former life.

It is also, however, an opportunity to take stock of the wonderful treasures life as an expat has to offer. One of my “treasures” is being a member of the tic family. Our club has a special place in my heart and, in some respects, is my family abroad. With all the different nationalities, ages and personalities within tic, every event becomes a new experience and the possibility to make yet another friend.

Your events team is already planning for the second half of the club season and I am excited to see what they have in store for us in 2019. Whether you spend the holiday season here with your expat family or travel home to be with loved ones, I wish you and yours all the best with the hope that you make joyous memories to last a lifetime.

Happy Holidays!

President’s message – Oct 2018

The leaves are changing color, everyone is back at work or school and tic’s 10th  Anniversary season is well underway. Even after a hugely successful welcome event, where we welcomed and entertained over 100 people, there was no time off for your board to relax. We quickly jumped in to the club season with a brewery tour, book club, movie night and a Thursday evening borrel.

The newly formed events team has breathed new life into our planning sessions and have come up with some creative ideas to keep your social calendar full. From fall picnics and ghost tours, to board game afternoons and attending live sporting events, there is definitely something that will appeal to your own idea of fun. This group is doing an outstanding job and we are so pleased to have them on the board. It won’t be long until we release the planned events for the second half of the season so be sure check out the website and follow us on social media to keep up with the busy schedule and join in on the fun! I look forward to seeing many of you at a tic event soon!

President’s message – June 2018

What a whirlwind of activity and changes we had during this club season! We visited museums, went on city tours, attended a real German Christmas market and had a wonderful art presentation! Those were only some of the fun things we enjoyed next to our regular events like borrels, book club and movie night!

There were also some significant board changes this year. An Event Team (led by Jessica Lipe-Swart together with Molly Johnson and Anne-Lise Artaud) was added to help alleviate some of the workload as well as offer even more diverse activities.

Estela Highet Garcia will be replacing Betty Wangsawidjaja as Treasurer. Anne van Oorschot, founder of the club and who currently holds the position of board secretary, is also stepping down from the board. Melissa Donders was voted in unanimously during our AGM as our new club secretary. I want to personally thank Anne and Betty for all they have done for the club. They started out as my fellow club and board members but I’m happy that true friendships have developed along the way. Also, I want to welcome our new board members and wish them lots of success and fun in their new positions!

TIC is also celebrating its ten-year club anniversary this year and preparation has already begun for a celebration to coincide with our annual Welcome Event coming up after the summer break. It is indeed busy but exciting times for your club. So … wherever your travels may take you this summer, I wish you warm, sunny weather but most of all wonderful, memorable moments with family and friends!

Happy Summer!

President’s Holiday Greeting

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is upon us and as I sit here writing this message, my mind keeps wandering back to all of things I need to do in preparation for the upcoming festivities. Like most of my fellow TIC members, my planning involves multiple countries and lots of traveling. Expats are a unique group – we embrace the many different traditions there are to enjoy and realize each one broadens our world and opens us up to new and different perspectives. TIC is here to help you enjoy some of these traditions as well. We will again be hosting the annual Christmas cookie workshop, borrels and, of course the holiday dinner in January to celebrate a new year. Your board is also planning the second half of the club year so be sure and visit the website for all the fun activities we have in store for you. Whether your holiday plans include traveling abroad or staying in the Netherlands … I wish you all a joyful time with family and friends and look forward to seeing you at a TIC event soon!

Happy Holidays!

Yolonda
