Downton Abbey – the Grand Finale

Our first movie night of the club year was a very intimate affair with only myself and a potential member attending. We went to the final Downton Abbey film, and while I enjoyed the film, maybe the film was part of the problem. Downton Abbey, a long running Netflix series, has 6 seasons and The Grand Finale is the 3rd film made which focuses on both the well-to-do Crawley family as well as their group of house & personal servants. Maybe people were not interested in the topic of how an aristocratic British family changes with the times, or maybe people did not feel like sitting inside when we had such unexpectedly beautiful weather on Friday. Who can say?

Rita and I did enjoy the film and stayed for a drink in the theater’s beautiful café area. Cinecitta’s monumental building on the Willem II straat 29 was constructed in 1904 as a cinema, making it the oldest film theater in the Netherlands! The art house theater building was extensively renovated a number of years ago, and the main room in the café/restaurant is quite spectacular. A fitting spot for a drink and a chat at the start of our weekend!
