It was Donna Brown’s birthday (congratulations!), and before our book discussion we all enjoyed a piece of traditional cake from the region—although I can’t remember its name. Masako brought homemade sushi and Japanese snacks for the occasion. We read A Pale View of Hills by the Nobel Prize laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, a British author of Japanese origin.

A nice group of tic movie buffs recently watched Hamnet for movie night, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this poignant film. To start, I found the first half a bit slow. It took its time to build the atmosphere, which, while beautifully crafted, left me feeling a tad restless. However, I was completely captivated by the cinematography. The visuals were stunning and that was enough to  draw me into the world of the story and keep me interested.

The Penguin Lessons

TIC movie night – The Penguin Lessons

Date: Friday, October 24, 2025
Review: by Anne van Oorschot

It was at the end of a windy and rainy Friday that 6 TIC members met at Cinecitta to watch a new film, The Penguin Lessons. The film was set in Argentina in 1976 at an elite boys school, where Tom Michell arrives as the new English teacher. On the cusp of a government coup, the situation is tense so Mr Michell takes a trip to nearby Uraguay on the weekend and – surprisingly – returns with an adorable small penguin.
