On 7 November 2023 TIC’s Book Club met to discuss Goodbye Sarajevo, which is a poignant and gripping memoir that offers a deeply personal account of the Bosnian War’s impact on one family. Written by Atka Reid and Hana Schofield, the book provides a unique perspective on the conflict, focusing on the experiences of two sisters, Atka and Hana, who find themselves on opposite sides of the world as war tears apart their hometown of Sarajevo.
The narrative skillfully weaves together the historical backdrop of the Bosnian War with the intimate details of the sister’s lives. The authors capture the emotional turmoil and the resilience of the human spirit amidst the chaos of war. Atka’s experiences as a translator for a war reporter and Hana’s struggles as a young woman trying to survive the besieged city create a powerful contrast that adds depth to the storytelling.
The strength of “Goodbye Sarajevo” lies in its ability to convey the impact of war on individuals and families, transcending the geopolitical complexities of the conflict. The sisters’ separation and eventual reunion bring a human face to the larger narrative of war and displacement. The prose is evocative and vivid, allowing readers to empathize with the characters and feel the weight of their choices.
In addition to its emotional resonance, the book serves as a valuable historical document, shedding light on the Bosnian War from a personal and relatable perspective. “Goodbye Sarajevo” is a compelling and thought-provoking read that not only educates readers about a lesser-known conflict but also emphasizes the universal themes of love, loss, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
With wars currently taking place in Ukraine and the Middle East, some TIC members viewed the book as an uncomfortable confrontation with current news, while others felt it served as a timely reminder of the universal cost of such conflicts on an individual level. There was ample material for discussion…in addition to delicious snacks!
