Nine Parts of Desire

We had a nice first Book Club after the summer, giving everyone had plenty of time to read Nine Parts of Desire by Geraldine Brooks. But first we took some time to catch up and hear about everyone’s summer and fun vacations. It was also a lovely warm evening, so we sat outside to soak up some of the last of summer time. Then, we dove into discussion of the book, which was about the lives of Muslim women in various countries in the Middle East, primarily throughout the ’80s and ’90s, as told by a journalist who reported on that area for many years. We discussed what we learned about the culture, the people, and how it has and hasn’t changed from then until now. Also how it differs from our lives and whether the perspective of the western journalist was unbiased or not. We had a lot to cover and quite a thought provoking discussion. The evening ended as usual, with a vote on our next book!
