On the last Friday of February, five of us got together to watch “Poor Things” at Pathe Centrum – a film that we had all heard many positive opinions about, and some of us were enthusiastic about because it had received 11 Oscar nominations. What the five of us had in common was that we really wanted to watch it and we didn’t delve deeper to know more about the film, going with the flow, so to speak. Another plus, was that we could get together just in time to watch it before the Oscars ceremony, which would be held on March 10th!
Right from the beginning, you could see the uniqueness of this film – the style of the shots, the music, and the awkwardness of the characters. At a certain point, the story began to evolve and took a twist that we didn’t expect. Watching Bella Baxter (the main character, played by Emma Stone) grow up, discover life (or better say… herself), and become a person without filters, without caring what society might think – all in an innocent way but really trying to help as much as she could – was intriguing. In my opinion, Bella’s stage of prostitution dragged on a bit too long, and the part with the original husband wasn’t necessarily needed either (although it was a well-deserved punishment for his behavior). In the end, I think all five of us were a bit surprised by the movie in general – even our neighbors were laughing at the person who selected the film for our group.
I must say, one positive aspect I really liked was the costume design in general, but especially Bella’s outfits. I would say this film deserves at least the Oscar nomination for “Best Costume Design.” Let’s see what the final award score will be!
The film finished a bit late, but four of us decided to grab a drink and some snacks in the city center. Funny to mention, this time we ended up being a Spanish-speaking group! It was a perfect opportunity to discuss the differences from our countries, places to visit, and of course, our integration/trajectory in the Netherlands. Lastly, shame on me – I forgot to take a group picture! Maybe next time
